Where to stay in Kampot: The best Hostel/Dorm Room in Kampot, Cambodia

Image
Happy February lovelies! Its @ maggie_hon  here and today I'd like to talk about a short visit to one of Cambodia's favorite weekend getaway location- Kampot. Kampot is a slow sleepy riverside town about 3 hours outside of Phnom Penh. Its really good for lazing the days away by the river, or doing water sports such as paddle boarding, or exploring caves etc. There are usually parties as well at night so, something for everyone. On my last trip to Kampot, my five friends and I stayed at a hostel called Karma Traders Kampot. And we were not disappointed! At Karma Traders, there is a choice of 4 bed mixed dorm room, 8 bed mixed dorm room. The dorm rooms are $7 USD per bed, and this price was a steal!! The rooms were clean and spacious. The beds and mattresses were sturdy and the bank beds had a curtain, incase one wanted some privacy. The dorms were ensuite and bathrooms were super clean with hot water and toilet paper provided. If this wasn't enough, there was a bar on th...

Island Get away : Koh Rong Samloem

Image
How beautiful is that?! Hi wonderful people, so I promised you a post about my get away to Koh Rong Samloem island remember? Well I am keeping my promise you guys :) Last month over the new year holidays, a group of friends and I decided to escape the city and go to a paradise like island here in Cambodia called Koh Rong Samloem. Now this is not to be confused with Koh Rong, this is a different island about 1 hour away from Koh Rong. It is smaller, quieter and with fewer backpackers, fewer hotels, just amazing. I have been to Koh Rong as well and maybe ill write a post about it just for comparison purposes. Now Koh Rong Samloem is 4-5 hours off of Sihanoukville by the slow boat, or 1 hour by the speed boat. The speed boat is definitely more expensive,at $30 return, but definitely worth it. Koh Rong Samloem is absolutely beautiful! The water was clear, the sand was white and so clean that it squeaked with every step. It was unbelievable! On the speed boat. Just got off ...

Racism in Cambodia.

Follow my Instagram  maggie_hon for snippets of my life in Cambodia and some of my travel adventures. Black people are discriminated against generally in all of Asia. I have heard horror stories from China, Hong Kong, Thailand etc. Black Africans experience the worst kind of racism in these countries. I have personally experienced racism in so many aspects of my life here in Cambodia and I will talk about it here for two reasons. 1) To spread awareness and 2) It is the issue I get asked most about in emails. 1. Visa on arrival at the Phnom Penh International Airport. Cambodia is one of the easiest countries to enter. Majority of passport holders do not need to have a visa before hand, Kenya (and many other African countrues) included. One just needs to apply for a business or tourist visa on arrival at the airport when they land. A tourist visa costs $30 and a business visa slightly more.  BUT  if you are an African passport holder, the immigration at the Phnom Penh...

Please follow me on Instagram @ maggie_hon Hi lovelies, Happy New Year to all of you out there. My year started of quite rough..I received 3 bad news-all different and unrelated..sheesh so much for 'I hope 2013 is the best one yet' . Oh well. I was going to talk about my 'Big Chop' in this post, yes I chopped of all my hair 2 days before the end of last year. And  I am now rocking a TWA (Teeny weeny Afro) lol and I absolutely love it. Other than that I'm back to work now-it's so good to see my little pumpkins..some of them stared at me for quite a while all confused...lol. I bet I look quite different to them. Many people have asked me why I did it, and I did for several very personal reasons. One of them being ..a change is always good. Ill def not go into the other reasons. It was a scary (brave) thing to do lol, I was scared id look all weird haha..anyho..I have some pictures of how my hair was before the Big Chop (rubbing hands together).I have ALOT of ha...

Chill Out Monday :)

Happy Holidays to all of you my lovelies wooohooo!!!It's not been all happy for me I'm afraid. I have been sick since Wednesday..grrrr and it has not been fun. I've just been in the house resting and fuming for most of Wednesday to Sunday. But hey, I have been feeling progressively better each day and today I woke up in such a jolly mood...and although I am not quite 100% yet and I still can't drink any alcohol :( I am really thankful that I do not feel like absolute crap on Christmas Eve. And if tomorrow I feel even better than today, then Il enjoy Christmas :) I was a bit worried that I'd be sick all through Christmas. What a beautiful morning it is my dears. It's sunny and the sky was so blue when I got up but now its a bit cloudy-but still beautiful though. I went to the market to get me some fresh fruits. And I was so tempted to sit down at the local coffee place inside the market with other Cambodians, but I didn't. I bought some guavas, bananas and...

Weekend in KAMPOT.

Image
Happy New Year to everyone.I cant believe this is my first post of the year..well I always do something interesting that I would want to write about or I have a really nice weekend or I see something and go like...my readers would love this..but I jus get too lazy to write really.I wanted to write about the comedy club asia last month, where i sat my ass at the front row...but I guess I shouldn't complain,my friend Lee on the other hand..well let's just say am afraid he has been scarred for life..lol.Then the comedy night this month, that Jonathan guy could speak Swahili..I thought that was cool..I wanted to write about my silly resolutions for the new year,I wanted to write about what I did the other weekend (Spanish themed dinner, drinks, dancing that ended up in the African club...good times),but ill just write about my weekend in Kampot for now.Ill write about the other things later. So I went to Kampot last weekend.Kampot is a town outside Phnom Penh. There was 4 of us girls...

Christmas in Phnom Penh,Cambodia...

Merry Merry Merry Christmas to all my readers.Wherever you are I hope you had a wonderful day yesterday.I thought id write a short post about what i did on christmas day here in Cambodia.I can say i had a wonderful time, although nothing compared to what id have done back home...sob sob.I really miss my family and friends in Kenya.  Ok so Christmas this year was on a Sunday!!How cool is that?I woke up early(9 am) got ready to go to church.I attend a church called ICA..International Christian Assembly.service starts at 10.30 am.It is a really cool church, the members are mostly Western expats with a few Cambodians, and a few Africans really. There are several African churches here, but I like my church.I contemplated going to an African church for Christmas service,I knew I was going to get a taste of African...obviously..you know how we do.We sing and dance until we are all sweating...it's usually alot of fun,but i kinda wanted a more quiet kind of service.I wanted to sing carols...Si...

Nerdy Nerdy Nerd Night Phnom Penh on Mon 5/12/11

Image
Hi everyone,I hope all of you are doing well.Aren't you glad how cool pp is at the moment? It's definitely a bit chilly sometimes in the the morning ay?Where is the hot water when you need it right? And last night it rained a little..Anyway,I dont think talking about the weather is a fun way to start this post..so enough already. Most expats living in Phnom Penh knows about Nerd night right?Ok those who dont know..Nerd Night is..erm,ok it's like a presentation but really cool and fun.The idea is to have people give a presentation of something they are passionate about, something they love and are nerdy about. There is no particular theme and this is so cool as it makes the topics presented on vary..making it really interesting. The presentations should be short as the rule is 20 slides 20 seconds each...although sometimes this is not always so practical. After a presentation, the crowd gets to ask qs.It is really interesting to learn about other people's interests. Tw...

Cambodia's Water Festival cancelled this year!!!

Image
Hi beautiful people, hope everyone is having a wonderful time in this beautiful Kingdom..or wherever you are.Am having such a good day today.Anyway so last night I was having dinner with a friend of mine and she mentioned that the water festival has been cancelled this year...and I was like WHAT????For thosse who don't know...Water Festival is the largest public festival in Cambodia. The festival marks the reversal of the flow of the Tonle Sap river, and obviously there is a "scientific'explanation for this reversal.but its more fun when I think about it  as.."The river is just bored of flowing in the same direction all year long and decided..what the hell,am gonna go this way now!!" The highlight of the festival is the boat races on the riverside and fireworks afterwards...aaaah.The festival happens over 3 days once every year in November in Phnom Penh (the capital city) and bout 2 million people(ok..ok...1 million) come to Phnom Penh to enjoy the boat races,part...
